Galaxy Ace – Gingerbread update
Posted: September 1, 2011 Filed under: Android 46 Comments »Great news for Galaxy Ace users in India. The official Gingerbread update became available yesterday (31st August 2011) through Samsung Kies.

What is Gingerbread
Android is an operating system and Gingerbread is the latest version of it, for mobile phones. The Gingerbread series is 2.3.x with the latest being 2.3.4.

How do I update
You would have to update your firmware through Samsung Kies. Its a software that you can download from here: www.samsungapps.com/about/onPc.as. (After downloading, you might have to update the sotware itself, as the link might not provide the latest version directly.) No linux version of the software exists. So you might have to login into Windows.
Once you have an updated Kies, you should be able to see something like this.

Connect your device now. Wait for Kies to detect your phone. Kies should automatically say that you have new firmware updates to be installed on your phone. Follow the instructions and you’d have Gingerbread installed on your phone.
Restart your phone to ensure that all updates have been installed.
What’s new in Galaxy Ace Gingerbread
You’d be able to see a few changes in looks in your phone now. Before looking at them, go to Settings->About Phone and check the Android version. You should be able to see 2.3.4 and Build Number showing GINGERBREAD.DDKQ5.

What’s New
The immediate observation after upgrading is the change to the system notification bar. Icons are much more compact and they look a bit more sleeker.

You can also see that the GPS and Sound icons have changed. Earlier silent mode was highlighted. Now its the opposite. If you disable silent mode on your phone, the icon is highlighted. You can also view whether vibration is enabled or not.
When you are typing text, you can see that the circular hold icon is replaced by a rectangular one.

Other noticeable features are:
- Most importantly, Indic languages are now supported.
- The phone appear to be a bit faster
- Increased battery life
- Improved copy-paste functionality upon select-all
- A new system app called Downloads available now
- The line traced while typing text using swype also appears more transparent now
- WiFi bug seems to have been fixed
- No noticeable bugs yet
Do let me know if you are encountering any problems or have found other new features too.

You can install it if you are using an usb modem. The problem apparently is, ur usb modem screws with your kies installation. So every-time, kies comes to the upgrade firmware stage, and windows throws up an error. people have reported this problem, but the only solutions seems to be to use alternate sources of connecting to the web.
galaxy ace luck great after upgrade……..i also updated my ace
Hi !!
Just updated my ace to 2.3.4! u were talking about the wifi bug fix? care to elaborate?
I have this wierd prob where my ace switches off randomly when on wifi, is this the same bug that got fixed ?
regards
Harsha
Earlier, there was this problem that you couldn’t connect to WiFi after closing an existing connection. You would have to restart every time, to connect to WiFi again. That seems to have been resolved.
hey …. i can’t connet my phone to kies pc suite .. it seems to be charging only…i.v tries on 2-3 computers n laptops.. any idea wat to do???
reinstall the usb drivers by clikcing the troubleshoot button, restart pc and connect the phone again. I will recommend to use xp for using kies features to the fullest extent on any pc. if you have windows 7 then try to run the programme in the compatibility mode for xp.
Hey I always “preparing firmware upgrade components” & every time it stucks there only… I have tried more than 10 times… Even uninstalled & reinstalled Kies but no luck… Can anyone pls help me out???… I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit & 1mbps internet connection…
Lot of people tell to use windows XP… Will it really help???
i m not able to update my galaxy ace via kies
the same problem with me….when i connect it doesnt automatically update like you said and even when i try to do it manually the option doesnt allow me to click it
Try using Odin Installer from here
Its still the official Samsung ROM and u will definitely be able to successfully update your fone vai this. It is not a custom ROM just an alternate to Kies so its not rooting your device. just follow the on screen instructions

upgradetion stop on collecting update data….
It seems skin support for messing is removed on 2.3.4.
@Hamlin: It is probably true and it is the only reason what for I rolled back into 2.3.3 in my Galaxy ace There is another awesome feature: screen capture. Press home and back button simultaneously, it will capture your screen then and there. The image is stored in screencapture folder under my files. Try it.
Screen capture phone was from the begging even on 2.2 (froyo)
After the gingerbread update… my battery drains faster
Any idea why??
try to disable gps, wifi and bluetooth if not in use
That’s strange……. The update is optimized for battery life increase. Try turning off GPS, WI-FI when not required. THis increases Battery liffe
Also clear RAM from the task manager from tym to tym so that the background processes are in Check
Hope this helps
Hi,
Could you plz tell me if any phone backup need to be taken before upgrading the firmware?
Main back up is phone book, sms, memo notes, phone log, bookmarks etc. you may keep those back up for safety. Actualy I did it through odin. To my utter surprise it did not touch anything. All was intact.
hi..
after i updated my ace to gingerbread..m experiencing that when the screen is off and then you press the home button or the “side lock” button..it takes longer(almost 1-2 seconds) for the screen to light up than it used to when my phone had froyo..
Anyone else experiencing this??
@Sumit…….same problem with me…I want to know is tht this problem of lighting lately is happening with every other person who had upgraded….
also the no. of contacts u can send message at once has reduced to 10 from 20……is it so???
Mine also takes it ~1sec to flash the lcd after pressing home/power button. And sms not permitting >10.
It includes an awesome feature: regional font support. Just install panini keyboard according to your language and feel the magic.
this is the normal delay for the lock-screen
does anybody has the solution of late lighting of the lcd after pressing home or power button????
Plz help!!!
If it takes too long to flash up the lcd, try with factory settings restore after backing your data up. I can’t guarantee, but if it works, let me know.
for some reason i think the clarity has been tampered..it’s very subtle but i think i notice a slight diff.. any1 else spotted this particular thing…n do plz let me know if any possiblity of rectifying this..
before i upgraded to gingerbread, i have several options to change the message skins, like the default, gloss, memo, note etc. Now, i can’t seem to find that option anymore. Is there something wrong?
thanks in advance
nice review btw~
ace now becomes faster ..as compared to old version froyo, but can any body help me out to understand how can i see data uses while use 2g or 3g data on my phone, although i have installed free software from android market but i cannot see any in built feature for this purpose. One more thing which i missed from last version is .. Samsung Email features which used to give advantage of adding more E mail accounts from yahoo.. hotmail..msn…….
one more useful thing that don’t use kies to upgrade your version because some time it fails and may lead to software failure as happen with me … go to service center and they do for free wihin few minutes………
some broblem to connect wifi
I don’t see any issue…after upgraded. ya earlier it was sucking and gives error
GPS not working after updated into 2.3.4 and battery back become worst ever..
does anybody knows about 2.3.6 upgrade??? When it will be available for India through Odin flash….??
i don’t think it’s avaliable through odin flash but if you go to settings>about phone>software update > update it should update to 2.3.6 as i did it in the uk so it might come through soon to india
thank’s..succesfull update my galaxy ace… ^.^
